I modelli digitali

The Project

in the context of the restoration (link) of the Neptune Fountain, in Bologna, the Visual Computing Lab of ISTI-CNR has implemented the Information System used by the restorers throughout the entire fieldwork extent. The Information System, completely online and web-based can be accessed directly from within the scaffolding surrounding the Fountain using a wireless connection, and it is used to collect and archive all the data gathered during the analysis of the state of the artwork and the restoration itself, and geo-reference them to the 3D models of the Fountain.
The idea was to create a system strongly based on the 3D models, enabling the restorers to organize all the data related to the restoration in a "3D spatial" way, referencing them directly onto the geometry of the Fountain.

The restoration works are coordinated and financed by the Comune di Bologna. The preliminary analysis and technical designs have been carried out by the Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna. The interventions on the stone surfaces of the Fountain and on the bronze sculptures are managed by the Istituto Superiore per il Restauro e la Conservazione – MIBACT.

The 3D Information System

The design of the Information System, coordinated by Università di Bologna together with ISTI-CNR and Istituto Superiore per il Restauro e la Conservazione, is structured as a database, where every annotation, operation and scientific measurement are also directly connected to the geometry of the Fountain. In this way, parallel to a "classic" database-style data access (keywords, tags, relations), it is possible to access the data also through a "3D spatial index", which is the very geometry of the Fountain.
Since every record has a specific position in the reference space of the Fountain, all the information can be reached exploring the 3D models of the Fountain or of its sub-parts, seeing in real-time on the surfaces the points, lines and areas marked by the restorers, and associated to the records.
The information system, based on open-source database tools, manages data records in a straightforward way, and implements the standard functionalities of this kind of systems: user control with roles, temporal log that memorize all the actions done by the users, and a repository for documents (images, pdf, texts) that are also associated to the annotations.

Online work on 3D

The Information system is completely online, this means also the 3D models has to be managed via web. By exploiting the features of 3DHOP, an open-source tool for the web-based visualization of 3D models, developed by ISTI-CNR, it was possible to create a system that, using streaming and multiresolution, let the user access the 3D data stored in the Information System in an effective way, directly inside the web-browser, without additional components installed. The user may explore the geometry of the whole Fountain or of a sub-part, moving around the geometry by using a simple 3D navigation mechanism.
The visualization is just the first half of the tool: when entering new data in the system, the users work directly on the 3D models, associating the annotations onto the surface of the 3d models. By using an editing interface, they may indicate points, polylines and areas on the three-dimensional surface, and take measurements of distances, lengths and surface areas.
The multiresolution streaming allows to seamlessly work on very large 3D models (some of the elements of the Fountain have more than 30 millions triangles).

The Digital 3D Models

The three-dimensional digital models used in the system have been provided by the DICAM department, directed by Prof. Gabriele Bitelli, and by Studio MCM. 3D digitization employed portable active 3D scanners and 3d-from-images approaches. The geometric resolution for the whole fountain is 1mm.

For logistical reasons, each element (statue, decorative piece, structural unit) has been digitized separately, generating a single 3D model. The Visual Computing Lab team has processed the raw 3D models, cutting out the area surrounding each part, re-aligning all the pieces in a single reference system (geo-referenced to the official cadastrial system), and finally generating "global" models for the whole fountain and for each level. All the 3D data processing work has been done using MeshLab, the open-source software for the visualization and editing of high-resolution 3D models developed by ISTI-CNR.
ISTI-CNR also re-texturized all the elements of the Fountain, starting from an accurate photographic campaign (provided by the Università di Bologna). Also in this case, all the color processing has been carried out using MeshLab.

The Information System uses a lot of 3D models, one for each of the elements of the Fountain (statue, decorative piece, structural unit), and just by considering those, we reach a total of 600 millions of triangles. Additionally, the system also uses "global" model for the different levels of the fountain and for the whole structure, plus, the "context" models, that represents the area surrounding each element and structure; in total, the size of the working 3D models exceeds the 100GB mark.
