Il progetto

Il Visionary Cross project è un progetto multidisciplinare il cui intento è lo sviluppo di nuove metolodologie per l'archiviazione e la pubblicazione di testi e oggetti multimediali assicoati alle Visionary Cross dell'Inghilterra Anglo-Sassone.

ISTI-CNR ha collaborato con i partner del progetto in due principali attività: l'acquisizione e produzione di modelli 3D ad alto dettaglio di due importanti croci (Ruthwell e Bewcastle), e la creazione di "edizioni digitali" delle croci, accessibili via web sia dal pubblico che dagli esperti della materia.

2012: Scansione 3D della Ruthwell cross

La croce di Ruthwell è una croce di pietra eretta nell'ottavo secolo nei pressi di un sito militare (in seguito probabilmente trasformato in monastero) nel Dumfriesshire. La croce fu rimossa e smantellata nel diciassettesimo secolo, e parzialmente ricostruita nel diciannovesimo. E' ora collocata nel piccolo abside della chiesa di Ruthwell. La croce è scolpita con scene delle scritture circondate da iscrizioni in Latino nei lati maggiori, e con decorazioni vegetali circondate da un antico poema runico inglese nei lati minori. Il poema potrebbe essere la più antica testimonianza di poesia Anglosassone.

Nel 2012, è stata condotta una campagna di scansione 3D per ottenere un modello ad alto dettaglio dell'intera croce.

L'intera procedura di processamento dei dati è stata eseguita con MeshLab, il mesh processing tool open source creato dal Visual Computing Lab.

2013-2015: Una edizione digitale della Ruthwell Cross

La creazione di un modello ad alto dettaglio della croce è stato solo il primo passo della collaborazione.

I membri dei working group, facendo uso delle nuove funzionalità proposte da HTML5, hanno creato una visualizzazione web del modello ad alto dettaglio, integrata con informazione testuale [3].

In seguito, una prima versione della edizione digitale della croce è stata resa disponibile alla comunità, e diversi esperimenti relativi alle varie edizioni delle iscrizioni runiche sono stati completati [1][2].

2017: Scansione 3D Bewcastle cross

La croce di Bewcastle è una croce dell'ottavo secolo, anch'essa trovata presso un precedente sito militare Romano. Simile come dimensione alla croce di Ruthwell, la croce di Bewcastle Cross si trova ancora nella sua posizione originaria. Contiene i resti di una meridiana, ed era probabilmente decorata con colori e pezzi di vetro. Uno dei lati è scolpito con motivi simili a quelli della Ruthwell cross.

ISTI-CNR ha eseguito la scansione dell'intera croce nel Luglio 2017.

    The project

    The Visionary Cross project is an international, multidisciplinary research project whose principle objective is the development of a new kind of digital archive and edition of texts and objects associated with the Visionary Cross tradition in Anglo-Saxon England.

    ISTI-CNR collaborated with the partners of the project in two main activities: the acquisition and processing of the 3D representation of two important stone crosses (Ruthwell and Bewcastle), and the creation of a web accessible "digital edition" of the Cross, available to both the genarl public and the scholars.

    2012: 3D acquisition of the Ruthwell cross

    The Ruthwell Cross is a 17 foot high stone cross erected in the eighth century near a former military site (later probably a monastery) in Dumfriesshire. The cross was pulled down and broken in the seventeenth century and partially reconstructed in the nineteenth. It is now located in a small apse on the north side of the Ruthwell church. The cross is carved with scriptural scenes surrounded by Latin inscriptions on its broad sides, there and with continuous vinescrolls surrounded by an Old English runic poem on its narrow sides. The poem may be the oldest known record of Anglo-Saxon vernacular poetry..

    In 2012, a 3D scanning campaign took place in order to obtain a high quality 3D representation of the cross

    The whole data processing pipeline was completed using MeshLab, the open source mesh processing tool created by Visual Computing Lab.

    2013-2015: Building a digital edition of the Ruthwell cross

    The creation of a high quality 3D representation of the cross was only the first step.

    The members of the working groups took advantage of the newly available HTML5 framework to build a web-based visualization that could integrate 3D visualization and textual information [3].

    The main result of the effort has been the release of a first version of a digital edition of the cross and the experimentation on several editions regarding the runes carved in some panels of the cross [1][2].

    2017: 3D acquisition of the Bewcastle cross

    The Bewcastle Cross is an eighth-century standing stone cross also found on a former Roman military site, medications in this case on the terrace just inside the gate. Approximately the same size as Ruthwell, purchase the severely weathered Bewcastle Cross still stands in its original location. It has the remains of a sundial on its south side and may have been painted and decorated with other metalwork or glass attachments. The west face is carved with three figural panels, of which two also appear on Ruthwell.

    ISTI-CNR acquired the entire cross in July 2017.
