Roberto was born in Rome on July 20, 1960.

Roberto is a Research Director at CNR-ISTI, an Institute of the Italian National Research Council (CNR). He is part of the Visual Computer Lab. He graduated in Computer Science at the University of Pisa in 1984, and has been involved in Computer Graphics since then. He had joint appointments at the Department of Computer Engineering and at the Department of Computer Science of the University of Pisa, where he taught computer graphics courses (1990-1996).

He is currently engaged in research projects concerned with multiresolution data modeling and rendering, 3D scanning, surface reconstruction, scientific visualization, volume rendering, and applications to Cultural Heritage.

He published more than one hundred fifty papers in international refereed journals/conferences and gave invited lectures or courses on visualization at several international conferences.

He was Co-Chair of international conferences (Eurographics '99, Rendering Symposium 2002, WSCG 2004, Geometry Processing Symp. 2004, VAST 2005, SGP 2006, Eurographics 2008) and serves in the programme committees of several events (e.g. ACM Siggraph '04, Eurographics '04, IEEE Visualization '04, SMI'04, etc.).

Since 2001 he is Chief Editor of the Computer Graphics Forum Journal (with David Duke); Roberto is Member of the Editorial Board of the ACM Journal on Computers and Cultural Heritage.

He is member of Eurographics and IEEE. He has been elected member of the Eurographics Executive Committee on 2001; he served as General Chair of the Eurographics association in years 2009-2010 and Vice-Chair in the period 2003-2008.

At the national level, CNR nominated Roberto the coordinator of a national research line on Cultural Heritage & ICT ("Fruizione e Valorizzazione del Patrimonio Culturale"), that is one of the research lines of the CNR Dept. on Cultural Heritage enstablished on year 2006.
